Summer fish that is a fierce foe. A highly territorial fish you have to find rather than wait for it to find you. We use the KISS rule as always and keep it light but beach-casting is a good way of catching these fish on rocky ground. If using a beach-caster a rotten bottom rig is advised as these fish live in holes in the rocks and amongst the kelp.
Baits we use are ragworm/lug/crab/mackerel and just about any thing come to think about it. When handling these fish we prefer to hold them from the underside as the have spines on there dorsal. They can give you a nasty bite also so be careful when removing hooks. Some people eat these fish but my advice is don't as Wrasse absorb what they eat so if they have eaten something toxic then so will you. TACKLE Keep it light. A carp or match setup is ideal for these fish. Line: Again keep it light, in the range of 4 to 8 lbs.
For beach-casting a rotten bottom rig is advised.
Floats: We prefer small, coarse types, but in a moderate sea we use weighted ones. BAIT Live bait is best but anything will do. |
![]() Wrasse Two & a half pound bad boy Weather Fine: Bright and Sunny. Sea State: Slight. Tackle: Cigar float with live rag. Tactics: Fishing gaps between rocks. Venue: Torness
